Schlink Foundation Grant Guidelines
Grant Guidelines
These guidelines are intended to assist potential applicants in determining the appropriateness of applying for a grant from The Albert G. & Olive H. Schlink Foundation (the “Foundation”) as well as the procedure and timing for doing so. All grant applications receive careful consideration and thoughtful evaluation by the board on monthly basis. While the board has no set geographic limitations, it does give special consideration to grant requests from organizations located in Ohio, and particularly Erie and Huron Counties. There are no minimum or maximum grant requests amount limitations. The board carefully and actively evaluates its financial position and approves grants according to the need and in a manner that ensures that The Albert G. and Olive H. Schlink Foundation can continue operating and supporting charities for the foreseeable future.
General Restrictions
- All applicant-organizations must be able to represent that they are exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) and are not a private foundation, in each case within the meaning of appropriate Internal Revenue laws, as of the date of the grant request and/or as of any time during the funding period.
- Churches, schools, governmental or other entities covered by a group exemption are eligible for funding but must provide a copy of the group exemption letter and documentation of the organization’s inclusion within the group.
- Multi-year grants carry stipulations that no additional request will be made of the Foundation for a minimum of three (3) years following the payment of the last installment of a multi-year grant.
- Generally, grants are not made; (i) to individuals for any purposes; (ii) for the construction of statues, memorials or the like; (iii) for the purchase of blocks of tickets, advertising or sponsorships; (iv) to cover deficits or for placement in an escrow fund or for debt reduction; (v) for basic research or the evaluation of existing projects; (vi) for political purposes or lobbying activity; or (vii) for routine operating expenses or salaries/benefits of applicant-organization staff.
- Grants will not be made to any institution, regardless of Internal Revenue status, which in policy or in actual practice, discriminate against individuals in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or any state or local antidiscrimination statutes.
- No part of the grant funds shall be used to influence legislation or to participate in or intervene in any campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office.
Deadlines
Generally, grants are made twice a year. Grants may be made at other times, throughout the year, at the sole discretion of the board.
To be considered timely, grant applications must be received on or before April 30th or October 31st in the year in which you are seeking funding. Grant requests received on or before April 30th and approved by the board will be paid out in July and those received on or before October 31st and approved by the board will be paid out in January of the following year. There are no restrictions on reapplying if your grant request is denied. Grant applications received after the grant deadlines will be rejected and the organization notified. The request may be resubmitted for the next grant cycle.
These guidelines are intended to assist the applicant in timing its application and for the convenience of the Foundation’s board. These guidelines are not intended to bind the board to any approval and/or payout schedule.
Communication
The Foundation makes all its funding decisions as a board. All grant applications are circulated to the members of the board as they are received and are evaluated as a board monthly. Each board member has the same information and the same opportunity to review all grant applications. Therefore, we normally do not meet with representatives of the applying organization nor do we engage in lengthy telephone conversations. We may contact an applicant should questions arise as the board reviews the application.
The board may, from time to time, work or coordinate with other local and community foundations on projects the board considers impactful to our communities and its citizens.
Thank you for considering The Albert G. & Olive H. Schlink Foundation for your funding needs.
